Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels
In the wake of extensive damage to the seat of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles from the California earthquake of 1994, a new facility was needed to service the 4 million Roman Catholics in the greater Los Angeles area. Collaborating with Design Architect Jose Rafael Moneo, LEO A DALY provided executive architectural/engineering services and management of the consultants for the 240,000-SF Roman Catholic Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels. We also provided architectural and engineering support for liturgical art for the project. The centerpiece is a 128,000-SF, 3000-seat cathedral. The site includes a 23,000-SF residence for the Archbishop, resident clergy and visitors and a 55,000-SF conference center with parish offices and meeting rooms. Other amenities include a 2.5-acre plaza, cloister garden, 156-FT campanile tower, cafe and religious items store and 600-car underground parking garage.

The large main sanctuary is 330 feet long with a ceiling that rises from 85 feet above the baptistery to nearly 100 feet.
Structural engineering allows for more than 27-inches of lateral movement in any direction during a category 8 earthquake.
