Akron-Canton Airport Terminal Modernization
As Northeast Ohio advances from an economic and tourism standpoint, Akron-Canton Airport (CAK) modernized the terminal concourse to offer a higher level of service and enhanced passenger experience. The $34 million gate modernization is the final element of its 10-year, $110 million capital improvement campaign. The former gates for American Airlines and Delta Air Lines originally opened in 1962, and although the airport has worked diligently throughout the years to maintain and improve the gates, they were not designed for today’s modern aircraft.
Five new gates were added to what is now a light-filled, two-level concourse with ample seating. Passenger amenities such as mobile-friendly work stations, a service animal relief area, additional restrooms, a mother’s room, a new business center and a children’s play area ease traveler’s journeys.
Revenue is being enhanced with the addition of a new 3,000 SF food and beverage concession area filled with full height windows and expansive views to the airfield. New and refurbished passenger boarding bridges improve operations and provide weather-protected boarding for all passengers. The design provides for a shelter-in-place area for passenger protection during severe weather events.
To enhance aircraft movement at the terminal area, over 20,000 square yards of new concrete pavement were installed.
