The Cloisters on the Platte Chapel
The Cloisters on the Platte Foundation is currently developing the permanent retreat site for The Cloisters on the Platte. Set amidst the natural beauty surrounding the Platte River in Nebraska, the 930-acre Ignatian silent retreat site will provide a peaceful sanctuary that harmonizes with the surrounding Platte River valley’s natural beauty.
LEO A DALY was retained to design the chapel for this important project. Inspired by St. Margaret Mary Church in Omaha (designed by LEO A DALY in the 1940s), The Cloisters on the Platte chapel recalls the design principles and material palette of rural Gothic church architecture. The chapel will accommodate 80 guests, with custom designed seating and individual kneelers.
A bell tower serves as a visual beacon and a call to worship. Custom mahogany entry doors with hand-forged pulls welcome guests inside. The chapel’s interior reveals a palette of natural materials and abundant natural light. Its ambulatory aisles are designed to be opened to the exterior, when desired, for greater access to the surrounding picturesque outdoor setting.
